FASTag has achieved over 98% toll collection through the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program, with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acting as the central clearing house.

FASTag ensures transparency and security in toll collection. Each transaction is notified to the user and recorded in a central repository. No FASTag transaction can occur without the involvement of three stakeholders: the acquirer bank, NPCI, and the issuer bank.

*Cash Transactions*

Even for cash transactions, user fee collection agencies are required to conduct the collection process through the toll management system to maintain a centralized record.

*Audit and Monitoring*

NHAI conducts semi-annual internal audits of Project Implementation Units (PIUs) to monitor cash collection and exempt vehicles. Additionally, system integrators are appointed to monitor toll plaza operations 24/7 and report any suspicious activity.

*New Developments*

NHAI has invited tenders for implementing FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) based toll collection at five toll plazas. This will enable complete toll collection through FASTag and propose e-notices for invalid/non-FASTag vehicles.

*Use of Artificial Intelligence*

NHAI is considering installing audit cameras at high-value toll plazas that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to independently monitor the number and classification of passing vehicles.

The government has introduced a FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000, allowing users to make 200 trips.
